One of the most famous Chinese folk tales is "Journey to the West." It tells the story of a Buddhist monk and his group as they traveled by boat and make numerous attempts to leave China, first ousting an evil demon and ultimately reaching India. As they travel, the four characters develop their own conflicts in their desire for freedom versus their duties to others. The Monk joins with Tang Sanzang (Andy Lau), his former refugee, to fight the demons. But when he offers an idea to use the demon's magic scroll to defeat them, Tang Sanzang refuses, saying it would be too dangerous.
